On June 19, the international summer school of the MEDAL project will begin at the University of Tartu, focusing on teaching data-driven linguistic methods at various levels. In addition to participants from Estonia and other parts of the world, consortium partners in the Twinning project from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom will also come to Tartu. Prominent European linguists from renowned universities in Nijmegen, Birmingham, Cardiff, Berlin, Dresden and elsewhere will conduct workshops with the aim of developing the skills of young researchers and students in working with large data sets and data analysis.
"The plenary talks at the summer school will provide an overview of diverse corpus linguistics approaches and their applications. All colleagues interested in data-driven research, language diversity, digital humanities, and linguistics in general are welcome to attend the plenary sessions," says Associate Professor of Psycholinguistics Virve Vihman.
In addition to the workshops, poster presentations will be on display during the week, and some social events will take place for participants to get to know one another and explore Tartu and its surroundings. The plenary sessions are open and all interested individuals are welcome to listen to the speakers from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, in the Jakobi 2 lecture hall. Additionally, everyone is invited to attend the 3-minute flash talks by doctoral students presenting their poster presentations on Monday from 11:30 AM to 1:45 PM.
Plenary sessions:
19.06 Natalia Levshina (MPI) Corpus-based typology: Opportunities and challenges
20.06 Anke Lüdeling (Berlin) Intra-Individual variation. Corpus linguistics and research on register
21.06 Amanda Potts (Cardiff) Exploring constructions of identity using corpus-based discourse analysis
22.06 Peter Uhrig (Dresden) Large-scale multimodal corpus linguistics: Concepts and applications
23.06 Joint plenary (MEDAL PIs) Corpus linguistics, experimental methods, computational modelling
The goal of the MEDAL project ("Methodological Excellence in Data-Driven Approaches to Linguistics") is to enhance the competencies of all project partners in linguistic methods. Special attention is given to expanding the skill set of young researchers and students, as well as to building the reputation and developing linguistics at the University of Tartu.
