Centre for South Estonian Language and Culture Studies

The Centre for South Estonian Language and Culture Studies is a unit established in 2000 within the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics. The purpose of the Center is to coordinate and organize the research and academic study of historical South Estonian linguistic and cultural areas, as well as promoting it through courses, seminars, conferences and writing.

The main goal of the Centre for South Estonian Language and Culture Studies is to teach the indigenous languages and cultures of South Estonia (Mulgi, Võro, Seto), aiming to educate a new linguistically and culturally conscious generation. South Estonian languages and culture can be studied as optional subjects or a separate module.

The Centre is essentially interdisciplinary, collaborating with various research areas in the University of Tartu and various cultural, research and development institutions in South Estonia.
