Estonian summer courses with Association of Estonians in Sweden

Together with Association of Estonians in Sweden, our Department of Applied Linguistics has organized summer schools for more than 20 years.

The summer courses take place in Tartu every year in August, inviting old and new Estonian language enthusiasts with a pleasant atmosphere and a range of topics chosen based on each groups' interests. At the first meeting, the learners are divided into three groups according to their language proficiency level. In the beginner level language lessons, explanations in English are given when necessary. Common outings, concert and theater visits, and language cafes are also popular among students (pictured above is a moment from the language café of the 2017 summer course, photo by Maria Gerdås). Estonian language learners with a different mother tongue are also welcome to the summer courses. The course takes place from Monday to Friday for 4 academic hours a day, in addition to cultural events and language cafes, for which we ask you to register separately at the beginning of the course.

The 2020 summer courses were held online (in the Moodle and Keeleklik environment and with regular live online classes) due to COVID-19. In summer 2021, we were once again able to host the participants of the summer courses on site in Tartu.

Information on 2023 summer courses:

The program "Estonian language in a cultural context" (HVEE.TK.098, 52 hours) takes place in three groups according to language proficiency level. Teachers Tiina Kikerpill, Maarika Teral and Sirje Rammo are waiting for their new and old students in the second week of August (7.08 – 11.08.2023) in Jakobi 2, Tartu. Initial registration takes place through the Swedish Association of Estonians, learners are divided into three groups on the first day of the course according to language proficiency level.

In the intensive course, attention is paid to all sub-skills (writing, reading, listening, speaking) using the communicative language learning method. Students can develop their knowledge of the Estonian language, grammar and vocabulary, as well as improve their knowledge of Estonian culture and way of life.

Estonian lessons in the classroom takes place every day for 4 academic hours (from Monday to Friday usually from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.), in addition to independent work (including tasks in the language environment), an excursion with a cultural program and the possibility of visiting a language café on two afternoons.

For a cultural outing, this year's group will take a trip to Viljandi on August 10, where we will watch the family show "Suur Boy ja Väike Boy". The tickets and the bus have been booked, the teachers will give more information about the trip and tickets already in August at the beginning of the course.

We welcome all Estonian language learners to the language café (August 8th and 9th), regardless of language proficiency level - we can find common activities for everyone.

We will send the detailed program of the summer course including information about the rooms at the beginning of August.
