The Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics at the University of Tartu has long been known for its strong linguistics programs. The 2023 QS ranking confirms that the University of Tartu is the best university in Estonia to study linguistics.
The head of the institute, Liina Lindström, says: "It is a pleasure to see that linguistics at the University of Tartu is in such good condition. It is intertwined with the study of the Estonian language and closely related languages and plays an important role as part of Estonia’s national university." Virve Vihman, Deputy Head of Development, adds: "This is a great recognition of the effective and diverse work of our researchers and teachers who have worked hard to develop research of Estonian and other languages, as well as the teaching of linguistics at all three levels, and the international visibility of the University of Tartu."
At the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics, you can study linguistics at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. In 2022, the University of Tartu opened its first English-taught master's program in linguistics called Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics. This year we are also accepting applications to a new Linguistics master's program in Estonian.
The QS rankings are based on five metrics, including academic and employer reputation, research impact and productivity, and international research network.
