MEDAL consortium

Methodological Excellence in Data-Driven Approaches to Linguistics (MEDAL) is an international consortium initiated by the University of Tartu with the aim to develop and teach linguistic methodology.

The leader of the project is the Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics of the University of Tartu. In addition to the University of Tartu, the consortium brings together partners from the Netherlands (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and Radboud University, Nijmegen) and the United Kingdom (University of Birmingham). The project is funded by European Commission through the Twinning instrument.

The aim of MEDAL is to increase the methodological skills of all partners, with special emphasis on the development of early career researchers and students. In order to reach this goal, the partners will organise training schools and research visits. The partners will also work together on a research project spanning through the three years the project is planned for. Each year one of the partnering institutes will organise a summer school, focusing on one set of linguistic methods: corpus linguistics, experimental methods and computational modelling. Funding is assigned to allow early career researchers and students to visit partnering institutes in order to participate in summer schools and to network.

MEDAL is funded by European Commission through the Twinning instrument, which aims to support research in European countries that, compared to their peers, have lower research capacity and visibility – so called widening countries. The widening country of MEDAL is Estonia.
