Election commission registered dean candidates

On 12 September, the commission formed for the dean elections registered the dean candidates of the university’s four faculties. 

The dean candidate of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is the current dean, Professor of Medieval History Anti Selart, who was submitted by the council of Viljandi Culture Academy, the council of the Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures, the council of the Institute of History and Archaeology and ten academic staff members of the faculty.

The dean candidates of the Faculty of Social Sciences are Margit Keller, Associate Professor in Social Communication and Head of the University of Tartu Centre for Sustainable Development, and Janno Lahe, Professor of Tort Law and Acting Dean and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Margit Keller was submitted by two groups of academic staff members, one group including 13 and the other 12 members. Janno Lahe was submitted by a group of 13 academic staff members and the council of the School of Law.

The dean candidates of the Faculty of Medicine are Ruth Kalda, Professor of Family Medicine, and Külli Kingo, Vice Dean for Research of the Faculty of Medicine, Head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, and Professor in Dermatology and Venereology.

Ruth Kalda was submitted by the council of the Institute of Family Medicine and Public Health. Külli Kingo was submitted by the council of the Institute of Clinical Medicine, the council of the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine, the council of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy and a group of 25 academic staff members.

The dean candidate of the Faculty of Science and Technology is the current dean, Professor in Geology Leho Ainsaar, who was submitted by the council of the Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences and the council of the Estonian Marine Institute.

The candidates may withdraw from the election two working days before the start of voting at the latest.

The voting takes place electronically at valimised.ut.ee. The first voting round will take place on 3 October from 00:00 to 18:00. If needed, the second and third voting rounds will take place on 4 and 5 October, respectively.

For more detailed information about the dean elections, see the Rules for electing deans and directors of institutions and the intranet. The mandate of deans taking office on 1 January 2024 is valid for four years.

On 4 September, the rector formed the commission for the dean elections. The chair of the commission is Academic Secretary Tõnis Karki and members are Associate Professor in Human Physiology Aavo Lang (Faculty of Medicine), Associate Professor of Translation Studies and Director of the Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures Terje Loogus (Faculty of Arts and Humanities), Associate Professor of Technology Research Mihkel Solvak (Faculty of Social Sciences), Associate Professor in Science Teaching and Head of the Centre for Science Education Regina Soobard (Faculty of Science and Technology) and Legal Counsel Aliis Liin.
